Résumé

In the bustling streets of late 19th century New York, Maria Guarnacelli stepped off the boat from Italy, her eyes bright with the promise of a new life in America. Little did she know, her journey would soon intertwine with the rugged landscapes of the West and the rich heritage of the Native American people. On that very vessel, Maria crossed paths with a woman whose ambitions mirrored her own - to forge a path of independence and opportunity.
This chance encounter would prove pivotal, as the two swiftly struck up a partnership to establish a marriage brokerage business. With determination in their hearts, they set to work, meticulously compiling a ledger of prospective husbands scattered across the vast Western territories. To make the ladies feel at ease when they entered, they took it upon themselves to spruce up a rented office space.
They added some potted plants for a touch of greenery, and made sure to clean every nook and cranny, as well as the shelves. They even went as far as making new cushions and curtains to add a homey touch. Among the many names already written down, one caught Maria's eye - George Warren, a man of humble means but grand aspirations. He owned a small business and a homestead nestled in the rolling hills of Northern California's wine country.
Through a series of heartfelt letters, where George told her about his birthplace in Arizona, and where he'd left from and travelled to Northern California, a connection blossomed between the two. Maria regaled George with tales of her culinary prowess, honed in the kitchens of her Italian upbringing, and her dreams of raising a large, loving family.
