Twenty-one doors appear around the Core. Each doorway leads to a different origin for the living manuscript. Behind one, Christopher created the universe. Behind another, Early dreamed Christopher into existence. Others reveal writers, worlds, and endings neither man remembers. Only one door belongs to Early. He must identify it before the competing histories become permanent. Every doorway opened gives the Core another past, and every past changes the world waiting outside.
Christopher searches the shifting histories for the first writer. He finds erased signatures, unfinished warnings, and a recurring room containing a chair turned toward a blank wall.
