>Das Unbehagen in der Kultur< lässt sich als eine Bilanz der Theoriearbeit Freuds und als erste Summa eines nicht unumstrittenen, aber etablierten Kulturdiskurses lesen. Wolfgang Müller-Funk kommentiert in dieser Neuedition Freuds zwiespältige Kulturtheorie und schildert deren Entstehungsgeschichte. Er erläutert die verschiedenen, zum Teil auch widersprüchlichen Konzepte, die Freud in seiner Studie entfaltet, und diskutiert zentrale Begriffe.
Freuds Kulturbegriff etwa enthält eine auffällige Verwandtschaft mit dem englischen Begriff der Zivilisation und sieht Kultur eher im Sinne einer Einschränkung von Freiheit denn als deren Ermöglichung.
