Freuds Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phänomen des Fetischismus nimmt sowohl eine Sonderstellung innerhalb seines Werkes als auch bezüglich der theoretischen Genese seines Denkens ein. Die vorliegende Edition rekonstruiert Freuds Beschäftigung mit dem Fetischismus, die als ein Schlüssel gelesen werden kann, um zentrale psychische Mechanismen und Verschiebungen innerhalb seines Denkens zu erhellen. Zunächst wird der diskursive Boden skizziert, auf dessen Basis eine Erotisierung des Fetischismus erfolgen konnte.
Darauf aufbauend werden Freuds Schriften zum Fetischismus rekonstruiert und werkimmanent kommentiert. Anschließend werden einige zentrale Positionen der psychoanalytischen Rezeption nach Freud sowie produktive Weiterentwicklungen der Fetischismus-Figur in der Kulturtheorie vorgestellt. Freud's preoccupation with the phenomenon of fetishism occupies a special position both within his work and with regard to the theoretical genesis of his thought.
