Résumé

A royal pardon arrives at Newgate only minutes before young governess Clara Mowbray is due to hang for the murder of the child in her care. By the following morning, the official who delivered the document has been found stabbed to death, Clara has disappeared, and evidence suggests the pardon was forged by Ianthe Rooke-the notorious Gallows Dancer who carries coded final messages for condemned prisoners.
Barrister Vincent Ormesby takes Ianthe's defence, although he knows that innocence will not provide him with a convenient argument. Ianthe did interfere with the machinery of the law. She may even have helped place the disputed pardon in the messenger's hands. But the decision to spare Clara was genuine, and someone powerful was determined to prevent it from reaching Newgate. To identify the murderer, Vincent and Ianthe must reconstruct the final hours of a frightened child, uncover a concealed stair inside a politician's respectable home, and trace a trail of altered medical evidence, corrupted prison contracts, intercepted documents, and official clocks that refuse to agree.
Their investigation also exposes Ianthe's most dangerous secret: an archive containing hundreds of messages entrusted to her by the condemned. Its contents could destroy families, careers, and reputations-including Vincent's own. As suspicion closes around them, Vincent must defend a woman who refuses to surrender the whole truth, while Ianthe must decide whether his loyalty can be trusted when it gives him the power to intervene in her life.
The pardon saved one woman from the gallows. Now someone is prepared to kill to ensure that no one discovers why it was nearly too late. A Pardon Written in Blood is the fourth novel in The Newgate Cipher Mysteries, an atmospheric Victorian historical mystery series featuring coded final messages, courtroom intrigue, fair-play detection, morally complicated crimes, and a slow-burn adversarial romance.
