Résumé

At Morrowglass Sanatorium, illness is currency-and privacy belongs to whoever controls the records. Honora and Raphael Ashcombe arrive on the Sussex coast to confront Dr. Malachy Orpington, the celebrated physician who has falsely claimed credit for Raphael's miraculous recovery. Publicly contradicting him could expose the elaborate invalidism Raphael once used to deceive his enemies. Remaining silent would allow Orpington to profit from a lie that has already transformed Honora into society's ideal of the devoted nurse-wife.
Honora wants control of her own story. Raphael is determined to keep their dangerous history private. Neither tells the other everything. Then a supposedly paralyzed patient is seen walking through Morrowglass at midnight. By morning, Orpington is dead in a hydrotherapy room bolted from within. Every resident of the fashionable sanatorium appears to be concealing something: a stern nurse who falsifies patient identities, a decorated officer stealing laudanum, a society beauty hiding arsenic in her cosmetics, a powerful statesman terrified of medical scandal, and a patient whose physical limitations do not match the figure described by the midnight witness.
As Honora measures testimony against the dimensions of corridors, clothing, and bodies, Raphael searches for the institutional ambitions behind the murder. But his own body has begun to betray him. The weakness he once performed has been replaced by genuine attacks he refuses to explain. When concealed correspondence and hidden symptoms come to light, the investigation becomes inseparable from the fault lines in their marriage.
Honora and Raphael must determine who crossed the corridor, how the locked room was secured, and why the corpse remained warm long after death-before another carefully managed secret disappears forever. Because at Morrowglass, the most dangerous question is not simply who is lying. It is who believes they have the right to decide which truths belong to someone else. The Patient Who Walked at Midnight is Book 3 of The Winterbourne Deceptions, an atmospheric Victorian romance mystery series featuring fair-play clues, a locked-room murder, aristocratic scandal, dry marital wit, and a marriage repeatedly tested by desire, rivalry, secrecy, and chosen loyalty.
