Résumé
Newgate Prison has already hanged Josiah Bell. Three days later, barrister Vincent Ormesby sees him alive outside a crowded London railway station. Before Vincent can seize him, the dead man disappears. Hours later, another corpse bearing Bell's face, clothing, and name is discovered beneath an abandoned scaffold-with the marks of a second hanging around his neck. Two coded messages have arrived in Bell's name. The first commands her to reveal a hidden ledger. The second orders her to burn it. Only one message is genuine.
