These stories move across different eras of Japan-from the ancient traditions of Edo and the transformations of the Meiji period to wartime memories, post-war struggles, and the loneliness of contemporary urban life. The characters in these stories are ordinary people: a café owner, a lonely student, a salary man, a musician, a journalist, a fisherman, a librarian, and strangers waiting on forgotten platforms.
