Résumé

Why do human beings keep knowing? We usually imagine knowledge as something we deliberately acquire. We study, search, reason, remember, investigate, and eventually arrive at an answer. But what happens before the decision to know?In Why We Cannot Stop Knowing: How Perception Becomes Knowledge, independent researcher and author Sandeep J. Chavan examines the hidden cognitive movement that begins before deliberate learning.
A sound changes. Something expected is missing. A result contradicts prediction. A familiar situation no longer fits. Most perceptions pass without consequence, but some differences remain active. They create what Chavan calls Cognitive Delta-an unresolved difference within the cognitive field that can invite engagement and resolution. Through Cognitive Alignment Theory, the book develops a structural account of knowing:Perception ? Cognitive Delta ? engagement ? alignment ? resolution ? stabilisation ? knowledgeIts central proposition is simple:Knowledge is stabilised cognitive resolution.
But knowledge is not the end of cognition. Once knowledge stabilises, it changes what we notice, what surprises us, what becomes relevant, what can be integrated, and which questions become possible. Every answer therefore changes the cognitive field from which the next question emerges. The deeper cycle becomes:Participation ? perception ? Cognitive Delta ? resolution ? knowledge ? interpretation ? consequence ? renewed participationAlong the way, the book carefully distinguishes perception from knowledge, awareness from an inner thinker, ignorance from Cognitive Delta, confidence from knowledge, knowledge from interpretation, understanding from explanation, and correction from failure.
It also explores what this framework changes about learning, education, expertise, curiosity, disagreement, uncertainty, error, intellectual growth, and our participation in shared reality. The conclusion is not that human beings must know everything. It is almost the opposite. We remain limited, selective, revisable participants in a reality larger than any individual cognitive field. Yet while participation continues, we repeatedly enter conditions from which knowing may emerge.
We keep knowing because we keep participating. Written in a direct, conversational style, this first volume of Chavanian Conversations: Ideas for the Journey invites readers to reconsider one of the most ordinary and mysterious features of human life: how experience becomes knowledge, and how knowledge changes what we become capable of seeing next.
