Die Untersuchung von Chroniken, wissenschaftlicher Literatur, Reiseberichten und weiteren Texten erlaubt eine Annäherung an Wahrnehmungen und Vorstellungen der Autoren und ihrer Zeit. Es wird deutlich, dass grundsätzliche Einstellungen die Wahrnehmung beeinflussten, zum Beispiel basierte die Kritik an Königsherrschaft auf Vorstellungen über einen idealen Herrscher. So waren die Vorstellungen von Herrschaft auch dort "konservativ", wo man es nicht unbedingt erwarten würde, etwa in der städtischen Chronistik oder bei "Reformern".
Darüber hinaus kann man aber sowohl im politischen Bereich wie in Aspekten des Alltagslebens einen steten Wandel der Vorstellungen feststellen und es lassen sich in den Texten bewusste Umdeutungen durch die Protagonisten selbst erkennen. The analysis of chronicles, academic literature, travel literature and additional texts enables an approach on perceptions and ideas of the authors and their time.
It becomes clear that profound ideas influenced the perception, e.g. the criticism on the reign of the king was based on the conception of an ideal ruler. Thus, the conceptions of a reign were even "conservative" where nobody would expect them to be, e.g. with urban chroniclers or reformers. Moreover, a constant change in the conceptions can be identified not only in political areas and aspects of everyday life but also as intentional reinterpretations by the main characters themselves.
