Résumé

Shahela dragged Rumki into the bedroom and locked the door behind her. Without a moment's hesitation, she slapped Rumki across the face, her voice trembling with anger."Even after I warned you, why did you call him 'mama'?" Shahela demanded. Rumki, holding her burning cheek, stammered, "Believe me, I didn't do it on purpose! It just slipped out by mistake."Another sharp slap landed on Rumki's cheek.
"A mistake? How many times have I warned you? No one in this house should ever suspect that you are related to us! Do you want to introduce yourself as our relative?" Shahela's eyes burned with fury."No, no! I don't! I swear I don't!" Rumki cried, shaking her head vigorously. Shahela's voice dropped to a menacing whisper. "What if my husband had figured out that you are his sister's daughter? Do you think you could have stayed in this house then? I would have thrown you out immediately!"Tears welled up in Rumki's eyes.
"No one else in this house will ever know. No one will even suspect that I am the same little Rumki from our village, " she sobbed. Shahela's expression hardened. "From now on, your real name must change. If anyone asks, you will say your name is Bilkis."Rumki nodded, still trembling. "Yes. Bilkis. My name is now Bilkis.""Good. My husband already found your voice familiar. If he hears your real name, he will be even more suspicious.
So from today, you are Bilkis. And if anyone asks about your hometown, tell them a different village. Do you understand?""Yes, I understand, " Rumki whispered, wiping her tears."Now go and focus on your work. And be careful! Don't break anything in this house. Do everything properly. Now, go.""Okay." Rumki murmured and left the room, her heart heavy with fear and sorrow.
