The Great Campaign of 1862

In 1862, the frontier town of Dry Creek is tired of broken rails, crooked accounts, weak laws, and Mayor Silas Pemberton's polished excuses. When Moriah Dove Ransom, a precise, unshakable Black woman with a gift for ledgers and leadership, runs for mayor, and Tobias Whitcomb, a dry-witted white horseman with bruised pride and honest courage, runs for sheriff, the election becomes the strangest campaign the town has ever seen.
Public "displays of fitness" turn politics into chaos: a shooting match, a horse race gone sideways, a thin public supper, a pie contest ruined by patent tonic, a debate over missing funds, a repaired town rail, and a dance that makes everyone talk. As Pemberton schemes and Sheriff Clyde Burwell slowly learns the cost of weakness, Moriah and Tobias prove that public office is not speech, shine, or status-it is work.
By the final count, Dry Creek must choose between old excuses and hard truth, and two candidates win more than office: they win each other completely.
