In 1893 Ethiopia, British surveyor Arthur Pembridge arrives near Lake Tana with maps, instruments, and far too much confidence. Mariam Zala quickly teaches him otherwise. The roads change with rain, the lake keeps its own counsel, the villagers guard what outsiders have no right to take, and the Reed Mouth is ruled by a dangerous hippopotamus with no Christian manners. Tirunesh Woldemariam, a respected Ethiopian Orthodox healer, has little patience for Arthur's errors, but she cannot ignore his willingness to be corrected.
Through fasting days, bad Amharic, political suspicion, childbirth, floodwater, and one very judgmental mule, Arthur learns that courage is not always charging into danger.
