Résumé

The Fryer Ascends, Part 2 in the Greasepolis chronicles is a theological and culinary epic.  It tells the story of a conflict between the forces of flavour and imperfection (represented by the prophet Frank and his apostle Glen the Fryer) and the forces of order and blandness (led by the metaphysical entity Softly, the Adverb, and the Bureau of Blandness). The narrative charts the journey of the prophet Frank as he confronts Softly's attempts to sterilise existence by controlling grammar and grease, which leads to "The Great Drying" where all flavour disappears.
Frank's exile and the revelations of Glen ultimately lead to a cosmic fry-off that melts reality's rigid crust and a literal transformation where the Gospel becomes edible. The story concludes with the reconciliation of chaos and order, symbolised by the Final Receipt requiring an act of honest cleaning, signifying that true holiness lies in acknowledging and caring for the "spills" of life.
Otto Handley was born in Spitzbergen in 1979 and later studied sociology at the University of Manchester, where his fascination with the hidden structures of everyday life first took root. Now living in Basingstoke with his wife, Amalietta, and their six children, Handley divides his time between writing, exploring caves, tending to an unruly collection of orchids, and coaxing baroque melodies from his lute.
His work blends domestic observation with philosophical curiosity, reflecting a life shaped equally by the depths of speleology and the delicate discipline of horticulture.
