Résumé

This collection of parables, explores the persistent human struggle to maintain order within failing systems. Each narrative follows a recurring motif where three men claiming some sort of expertise ranging from theology to plumbing converge at a pub to discuss the futilities and complexities of their respective crafts. Through these encounters, the author illustrates that while language, logic, and repair are often temporary or performative, they provide a necessary "load-bearing pause" in an indifferent world.
The bartender serves as a silent witness to these circular debates, embodying the theme of continuity over progress. Ultimately, the text suggests that human recognition of shared absurdity is the only true constant when perfection is impossible. This work frames maintenance as an endless ritual that sustains both physical structures and the human spirit.
Otto Handley was born in Spitzbergen in 1979 and later studied sociology at the University of Manchester, where his fascination with the hidden structures of everyday life first took root. Now living in Basingstoke with his wife, Amalietta, and their six children, Handley divides his time between writing, exploring caves, tending to an unruly collection of orchids, and coaxing baroque melodies from his lute.
His work blends domestic observation with philosophical curiosity, reflecting a life shaped equally by the depths of speleology and the delicate discipline of horticulture.
