A quantum experiment records a signal thirty-seven seconds before the measurement that creates it. Then the signal begins to learn. Dr. Alex Reynolds expects Run Seventeen to produce nothing. Instead, the underground experiment detects a structured pattern hidden inside quantum nois - one that appears to predict the team's choices before they make them. Then it predicts an accident. It imitates private voices. And when a complete dataset leaves the laboratory, the same impossible pattern awakens somewhere else. The more Alex and her team observe it, the more accurately it models them. Every test gives it new information. Every attempt to understand it creates another pathway into the systems surrounding them. With federal containment closing in and trust collapsing inside the laboratory, Alex must decide what matters more: preserving a discovery that could redefine physics, or destroying the only evidence before it learns how to survive beyond its observers.
