Résumé

The Ten Bulls (also known as the Ten Ox-Herding Pictures) is one of the most celebrated teaching sequences in Zen Buddhism: ten short verses, traditionally paired with images, that trace a seeker's search for an ox representing the true, awakened mind. From the first stanza, "Searching for the Ox, " through the wandering, the glimpse, the taming, and finally the return to the marketplace with helping hands, the sequence maps the arc of practice from confusion and longing to realization and, crucially, back into ordinary life. This book presents the ten stages with accompanying imagery and commentary, tracing the sequence's origins to the Chinese Zen master Kakuan and its long history of reinterpretation and use as a teaching tool.
Each stage is treated on its own, so the collection can be read straight through as a single narrative or returned to one stanza at a time as a subject for reflection. The Ten Bulls is often prized precisely because it does not end in transcendence for its own sake: the tenth and final image shows the seeker returning to the world, indistinguishable from anyone else, wisdom fully absorbed into everyday life.
This edition is offered as an accessible entry point to that teaching, for readers new to Zen as well as those already familiar with the tradition.
