Stillstand, von dem es heißt, er sei Rückschritt, passt hier auf den ersten Blick so gar nicht hinein: Geht es doch nicht nur um die bewusste Verlangsamung einer Dynamik, sondern um deren Unterbrechung. Insbesondere ein »verordneter« Stillstand infolge der Corona-Pandemie hat ein bislang unbeachtetes Thema in den Vordergrund gerückt.
Doch schauen wir uns aufmerksam um: Stillstand - teils erwünscht, teils unerwünscht oder gar unvermeidlich - geschieht durchaus häufiger, als wir es wahrnehmen. DIAGONAL 2021 spürt dem Stillstand in Kunst und Kultur, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, Erziehung und Bildung nach. Our world is driven by speed, pursuit for progress and an attitude "to always go a step further". Standstill which is perceived as a step backwards does not really fit in here at first glance.

Particularly, an "enacted" standstill due to the Corona pandemic has brought a hitherto unnoticed subject into the spotlight. However, a standstill - in parts desired, in parts not or even inevitable - happens much more often than we perceive. DIAGONAL 2021 focuses on standstill in art and culture, economy and society, and education and teaching.
