Rise of The Mulberry Guardians

Maple Lane ended in a circle, like the street was hugging itself. That is what Jasmine liked about the cul-de-sac. No one could speed through it. No one could honk and roar away like Maple Lane was just a shortcut. Cars rolled in slow, careful as turtles, and kids could ride bikes in wide loops without feeling the wind of traffic snap at their elbows. At the very end of the circle stood the mulberry tree.
It was not the tallest tree in the world. It was not even the tallest on Maple Lane. But it had something better than height. It had story. Its trunk was thick and slightly twisted, like it had learned secrets from every season and decided to keep them tucked under its bark. Its branches reached out in curvy arms, some low enough for little kids to grab, some high enough that older kids could climb and look down at the whole neighborhood like explorers on a lookout tower.
In summer, its leaves made shade that felt like a cool blanket. And when mulberry season came, the berries turned dark and shiny, like tiny jewels that tasted like sunshine mixed with jam. And the mulberry tree had one more thing. It had a war. On the north side of Maple Lane lived the North Enders. Their leader, at least according to them, was Tyler Finch. Tyler was nine, fast on his bike, and proud of his ability to climb the mulberry tree using only his arms and the toe tips of his sneakers.
On the south side of Maple Lane lived the South Siders. Their leader, according to them, was Reina Ortiz. Reina was eight, fearless, and had a laugh that could bounce off houses like a rubber ball. She was the best berry picker because she had quick fingers and sharp eyes. And then there was Jasmine. Jasmine lived in the middle. Her house was not north enough to be a North Ender and not south enough to be a South Sider.
Her mailbox sat in the exact spot where the sidewalk changed direction. The war began three summers ago. No one fully agreed on how. Some said the North Enders claimed the best climbing branch first. Some said the South Siders started it by picking berries from the "north shade side" and leaving nothing but stems. And that is when something strange happened. A leaf drifted down. Just one. It floated slowly, turning in the air like a lazy green butterfly.
In late summer when it was too hot. In autumn when the whole neighborhood smelled like dry grass and pumpkin candles from inside houses. But this was early summer. The tree should have been bursting with energy. It should have been proud and leafy, like a giant green umbrella. Instead, it looked. tired. The mulberry war had always been their biggest story. But now a different story was starting. One that would not be won by capturing a branch.
One that would be won by saving a tree.
