For many years Rory has quietly been buying up land behind his cottage and Eugene's cottage. His father owned an old trap (cart) that was used many years ago for walking out engaged couples and for the marriage cart to and from the church. He has bought four donkeys at the town market and housed them in secret at stables out of the village. Now he wants to plant grass in as much of the land as possible and remove the trees and old sheds to be replaced with his own small stables and trappings for the business he plans.
He has the planning permission from Killarney counsel and now wants to start to clear the land and plant the grass. He imagines his son's having a thriving business for when he is gone. When Eugene hears about Rory's plans an sees the grass being sown. He is furious that he discovers all the land around him is in fact owned by Rory. He employs a lawyer to scupper the new plans (Jonny Simms) and so begins a fight over the changes Rory wants to make.
Rory's sons while at first enthusiastic for their fathers plans soon realise that this might curtail their own plans to eventually escape village life.
