The young man disappeared with his girlfriend while climbing the infamous Widow's Peak and Breeze is convinced that a preternatural monster is responsible. Joanna is happy to consult on the case, but feels that her responsibilities in Hadrian's Well preclude her from traveling a thousand miles away to the site of the disappearance. Yet, Montana really does need an officer with Joanna's experience because they've run into an ancient threat more dangerous than anything Joanna, or anyone else in the modern world, has yet encountered.

Cooperation was non-existent as politics continually got in the way of law enforcement. But now, a brutal encounter with the preternatural has forced out Joanna's old nemesis and the new acting captain comes asking for Joanna's help in identifying an unknown preternatural killer.
But is she really looking for aid, or seeking to win the old feud by tarnishing Joanna's reputation? It's quite the dilemma, but if Hadrian's Well and the state don't learn to work together quickly, a large part of Colorado may die, victim of a local legend. The Unicorn: The unicorn, one of the greatest of the legendary creatures, is all but extinct in the world with only three surviving in the Black Forest in Germany.
At least, there were only three until one impossibly shows up in Hadrian's Well-the very first to ever be sighted in the Americas. The appearance excites people in a way that rock trolls, brownies, water nymphs, and nosferatu couldn't-attracting politicians and thousands of tourists to the small town to see the endangered creature. But not everyone has the animal's best interests at heart and if Undersheriff Donovan and her deputies can't step up their game, the newest resident of Hadrian's Well may soon be joining its ancestors in extinction.
