Résumé

Mette Fraas Nielsen: The Nordic Cracker Queen - Life Is for Living is a compelling biography of a woman whose life has been defined by movement, courage and a willingness to begin again. Born in Ørsted, Denmark, Mette grew up grounded in family values, independence and quiet strength. Early experiences-including witnessing the loss of her family farm to fire and living with vision loss in one eye-instilled resilience and adaptability from a young age.
A gifted and diligent student, Mette trained as a chemical and materials science engineer and embarked on an international career spanning Denmark, Scotland and England before relocating to Perth, Western Australia. Working in a male-dominated profession, she earned respect through competence, integrity and preparation. Along the way, she faced significant personal challenges, including a period of severe stress and depression, emerging with deeper self-awareness and clarity.
Community leadership became a defining thread. Through Junior Chamber International, Mette developed as a speaker, leader and mentor, culminating in her election as Australian National President in 2003. Her thirteen years of service with The Jaycees Community Foundation included strategic leadership on the restoration of Albany's Historic Whaling Station-one of Western Australia's most significant heritage projects.
In 2015, following time living in Beijing, Mette embraced entrepreneurship, founding Mette Is Baking. Drawing on her Nordic heritage and engineering discipline, she built a brand renowned for quality and originality. Over seven years, just six products earned 37 national food awards, including Australian Food Award Champion Trophies. The business remained profitable throughout and was sold in 2025, with the brand name retained.
Today, Mette's philosophy is simple and lived: life is for living. Part of the Not Ordinary Lives: Movers & Shakers series, this biography honours reinvention, courage and the enduring power of saying yes to possibility.
