New England crime boss Raymond Patriarca was so ruthless that Hatian dictator Papa Doc Duvalier, who used his Tonton Macoute secret police to torture and murder political opponents, offered Patriarca asylum when Patriarca was facing a 1970 murder charge. New England crime boss Raymond Patriarca used other people as hitmen to attack his gambling racket rivals because these rivals in Providence Rhode Island did not want to give Patriarca a portion of their betting proceeds.
Patriarca was so ruthless he even had plans to assassinate his own hitmen, which caused some of these hitmen to turn against him and reveal to authorities his role in contracting murders once they found out their own lives were under risk of being taken by Patriarca.
