Teren's nephew Davor wants the book, two jars, and a blue cloth packet left to him without being made responsible for explaining Vera to the city. To protect that narrow refusal, Teren develops a bounded relational remainder: a way to close public obligations while allowing one ordinary material relation to remain unexplained.
The method is precise, humane, and dangerous once the Office recognizes that it can be repeated. As Teren confronts his sister's clean account of their own mother's death and a countercase warped by delayed notation, he must decide whether incompleteness can remain a protection after the institution learns how to measure it.
