Résumé

In Veyr, beauty is permitted when it performs a public function. A room may be calming, a color may reduce confusion, and a surface may help strangers move through rain. What the city cannot permit is a response that remains useful without becoming legible. Iral Meret has spent her career making public beauty safe. She knows that light, proportion, sound, and warmth can keep clinics usable, schools quiet, and transit halls moving.
She also knows how quickly an unassigned effect becomes a reviewable defect. When maker Siva Lent installs Rain Screen 4 in North Concourse, the work passes every visible requirement. In rain, however, residents stop beneath its seven panels for reasons no review room can reproduce. Some leave more able to continue. Others simply remain. The response depends on weather, angle, company, memory, and route, and refuses the clean purpose the Registry needs.
Iral protects the screen by classifying its excess as harmless. Then a separate acoustic work interferes with an emergency route, and the Registry learns to measure the difference between beauty that helps and beauty that cannot be assigned. To keep Rain Screen 4 in the city, Iral must prove that an unrepeatable response can survive only after the work itself has been changed. Approved Forms, Book VI of The Veyr Cycle, is a literary dystopian novel about beauty, public care, institutional control, and the quiet violence of making every human response useful.
