Résumé

Fayette County, West Virginia. Christmas Eve, 1945. A family home burns to the ground overnight. Four children escape with their parents. Five do not. The fire moves quickly, consuming the structure before help can arrive. By morning, only a foundation of ash remains. Investigators expect to find evidence of the missing children within the debris. They do not. What begins as a house fire becomes something more complicated.
A telephone line had been cut. A ladder is found moved from its usual place. Vehicles that worked earlier refuse to start during the emergency. Reports emerge of a strange call before the fire, and a sound on the roof shortly before smoke spreads through the house. Years later, an excavation produces fragments that do not align with the expected timeline or conditions of the fire. Witness sightings and a photograph received by the family suggest the possibility that the children may have survived.
Neither explanation resolves the case. The Fire on Christmas Eve reconstructs the event through physical evidence, fire behavior, witness accounts, and long-term investigative findings. It separates documented facts from evolving claims, focusing on what can be supported by record and environment. The result is not a single conclusion. It is a case defined by two competing structures-one grounded in accident, the other in intent-neither of which fully accounts for the evidence left behind.
