Der Rhein als Strom im Herzen Europas fasziniert bis heute die Künste und Wissenschaften. Dieser Band reflektiert einerseits traditionelle Rheinbilder und erweitert andererseits den Blick um neue Perspektiven. Autorinnen und Autoren verschiedener Disziplinen zeigen aus deutsch-französischer Sicht den Fluss als Lebenselixier und Erotikon, aber auch seine todbringende Gewalt, und darüber hinaus die Flusslandschaft als einen Ort der Zuflucht und des Exils sowie die Bedeutung des Rheins und des Rheinlandes als Erinnerungsorte.
Dabei wird der französischen und deutschen Rheinliteratur besondere Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Durch die Fokussierung auf die Nahtstelle zwischen den beiden Ländern untersucht der vorliegende Band die deutsch-französischen Beziehungen im Allgemeinen und Aspekte der vielfältigen kulturellen und historischen Beziehungen im Besonderen.
