Résumé

Under the eaves of Dongbaekru, a small wind chime hangs in a narrow alley off the port of Gunsan. When the night wind slips through, its thin metal pieces strike against one another. The sound is bright and brief. Then it fades, and silence returns as if nothing had happened. For Seo Haram, that sound is home. Haram has learned to remember the world through sounds: the way a door opens, the time it takes broth to boil, the moment a footstep changes on a staircase.
As her eyesight slowly narrows from retinitis pigmentosa, sounds become more than memories. They become landmarks. She has grown up at Dongbaekru, a small Chinese restaurant run by Park Yeon-ja-the woman who took her in after her mother's death. Around Haram are people who rarely say what they feel: Yeon-ja, who shows love through everyday acts; Do-yun, who quietly repairs whatever is broken; and Tae-seong, whose anger often hides a fear he cannot put into words.
Haram has never wanted much. She simply wants to become less of a burden. Then she finds a chance to leave Korea for a three-week, fully funded student language program in Britain. But there is one problem: she needs the signature of the legal guardian listed on her documents. A name she has almost never heard spoken aloud. Seo Gang-u. The father who disappeared from her life long ago. As Haram searches for him, an old song titled "Wind Chime" begins playing on the radio.
The melody carries a memory from her childhood-and leads her toward a man who has spent years living with the consequences of running away. Their meeting does not offer easy answers. There are apologies that arrive too late. There are questions words cannot repair. And there are people who love each other so deeply that they have forgotten how to say it. But sometimes, leaving does not mean abandoning home.
Sometimes, leaving is the only way to discover what home truly is. Under the Wind Chime is a quiet, lyrical story about family, loss, disability, guilt, forgiveness, and the courage to step into an uncertain future-without letting go of the sounds that keep us connected.
