Nora once believed that understanding began with words. Then a frightened child taught her otherwise. Years after leaving clinical practice, Nora has built a quieter life working with difficult dogs-creatures that reveal fear, trust, and hesitation long before language can disguise them. But when an old case from her past resurfaces, Nora is forced to confront the moment she failed to recognize what a child's body had already been saying.
As her work brings her into the lives of anxious families, wounded dogs, a guarded former prisoner, and her estranged brother, Nora begins to reconsider what it means to listen.
