"Die Walküre" nannte Richard Wagner den ersten Tag im Bühnenfestspiel für drei Tage und für einen Vorabend, der gewaltigen Tetralogie "Der Ring des Nibelungen". Die Uraufführung erfolgte 1870 in München. In diesem Teil spielt - im Gegensatz zum Vorabend - ein Mensch, Hunding, mit und ein Zwillingsgeschwisterpaar, Siegmund und Sieglinde, vom Gott Wotan mit einer irdischen Frau gezeugt. Ihnen ist von vornherein menschliches Leben und Lieben zugeschrieben.
