The composer composed the Quartet op. 10 in 1918 at the front in Alsace, and yet it shows not the slightest influence of the terrible events of the war. The three-movement work is full of youthful exuberance and reflects Hindemith's new compositional techniques.
His mastery and imagination in the use of the instruments prove that he was already completely familiar with the string quartet genre.
