"The Stolen Heiress ; or, The Salamanca Doctor Outplotted" is a comedic play by Susanna Centlivre that explores themes of love, deception, and social change. The plot thickens as Count Pirro, a wealthy but unattractive suitor, seeks Lucasia's hand in marriage, unaware of her secret love for Palante.
As the characters navigate their desires and familial obligations, misunderstandings and comedic situations arise. Eugenio, who is very much alive, returns to Palermo in disguise to uncover the truth behind his supposed death and his father's schemes. The play culminates in a series of revelations and confrontations, leading to a resolution that challenges the characters' initial intentions and desires.
Centlivre's play is a satirical commentary on the societal norms of her time, particularly the emphasis on wealth and social status in marriage.
