Résumé

"The Perjur'd Husband ; or, The Adventures of Venice" is a tragedy by Susanna Centlivre that delves into the intricate web of love, betrayal, and societal expectations set against the backdrop of Venice during the Carnival. The play opens with Count Bassino, who is torn between his duty to his wife, Placentia, and his love for the enchanting Aurelia. Despite his initial resolve to remain faithful, Bassino's passion for Aurelia leads him into a moral conflict.
Aurelia, on the other hand, is caught in her own turmoil, as she is betrothed to Alonzo but finds herself irresistibly drawn to Bassino. The narrative unfolds with a series of misunderstandings and confrontations, particularly between Bassino and Alonzo, who feels betrayed by Aurelia's affections for another man. The tension escalates as Alonzo challenges Bassino to a duel, suspecting him of being Aurelia's lover.
Meanwhile, Lady Pizalta, another character, engages in her own romantic escapades, highlighting the theme of infidelity that runs throughout the play. The drama reaches its peak when Placentia arrives in Venice, hoping to reclaim her husband's love. Her presence serves as a catalyst for Bassino's realization of his duties and the consequences of his actions. The play explores themes of love, honor, and the societal constraints that dictate personal relationships, ultimately questioning the true nature of fidelity and the human heart's susceptibility to desire.
