Résumé

"The Faithful Shepherdess" is a pastoral drama that explores themes of love, chastity, and change within a bucolic setting. The play opens with Clorin, a shepherdess, who has vowed to remain chaste in honor of her deceased lover. Her dedication to purity attracts the attention of a Satyr, who reveres her as a divine being. Meanwhile, the narrative follows several romantic entanglements among the shepherds and shepherdesses.
Perigot and Amoret are a pair of lovers whose relationship is tested by misunderstandings and deceit. Amaryllis, another shepherdess, desires Perigot and conspires with a sullen shepherd to disrupt his relationship with Amoret. The sullen shepherd uses magical herbs to transform Amaryllis into the likeness of Amoret, leading to a series of mistaken identities and near-tragic consequences. Throughout the play, the characters grapple with their desires and the societal expectations of chastity and fidelity.
The drama unfolds in a mystical forest, where supernatural elements and the intervention of woodland creatures influence the characters' fates. Ultimately, the play examines the tension between human passions and the ideals of virtue, culminating in a resolution that reinforces the value of true love and constancy.
