Résumé

Some apologies arrive too late. These arrive before the harm is done. When investigator Nila Sen returns to rain-soaked Devgarh after her aunt's death, she expects to inherit a failing post office, unpaid debts and a building she cannot afford to save. Instead, she finds a locked room filled with pale blue letters. Each contains an apology written in the unmistakable hand of someone in town. Each describes a betrayal, act of violence or fatal decision that has not yet occurred.
The first letter gives Nila nine days to prevent a father from striking his daughter. But when she intervenes, the date changes and the threatened future moves closer. As more letters appear, Nila is pulled into a web of family secrets, institutional neglect and corporate misconduct, as well as choices her aunt made in the name of protecting others. Some warnings may be genuine. Others may have been created to frighten people into obedience.
To uncover the truth, Nila must decide how far anyone may go to prevent possible harm and whether an apology can become another form of control. Because the most dangerous inheritance is not property. It is responsibility for what other people might do next. The Woman Who Inherited Everyone's Apologies is a haunting literary mystery about regret, consent, family obligation and the unbearable temptation to save everyone.
