The Virgin of the Sun

A shipwrecked Englishman is carried to Peru before the conquest and taken for a god by the Chanca; the Incas make a Virgin of the Sun of the woman he loves, and the penalty for touching her is known to everyone. Haggard went to South Africa at nineteen and helped raise the Union Jack over the Transvaal; here he wrote the Andes from the chronicles, and the priesthood is the antagonist, as usual with him.
