You sleep, you sleep deeply, and something wakes you up. Terry Watts has the solution, his dream machine. Hundreds of years earlier, a spaceship makes a forced landing on the planet GEON, a water world with no land masses.
The ship hits the water and damages the rear loading ramp, flooding the ship and killing the crew. In order to preserve itself, the ship's computer, knowing the crew were all dead, shut down all the systems and put itself into hibernation. The Geoni, having no technology, could make no sense of the strange machine, so they left it to the elements. Years later, a group of 'scientists' called 'the curious', started to inspect and catalogue the ship.
They reasoned that the crew were air breathers, and set about a program of selective breeding to produce a being that could live in air or water.
