Résumé
The third novel in The Keystone Cycle, a five-book literary series following five Greek diaspora teenagers across four years and four continents. Lina Belhadj-Kosma arrives at the Pothia dorm on Kalymnos in August 2026 expecting to be the cohort's translation worker. She is the only fully trilingual student in the house. She speaks Greek with a Sfax-Greek register her grandmother taught her, French at university level, and Arabic at her father's family-dinner level.
She carries a small notebook with three columns. In October she opens a storage room on a chore errand and finds a stack of letters labeled in Sfax-Greek. The top letter is from 1903, written by an eleven-year-old girl sent from Sfax to a Pothia household placement. The girl is Lina's own great-grandmother's mother's sister. Lina has spent her whole life at one half of the family's diaspora circuit.
She is now at the other half. She begins to translate. Two years in Kalymnos. Two years in Sfax. One hundred sixty-two letters. A grandmother at a painted kitchen table on Rue de l'Algerie who is one of the last Sfax-Greek women of her generation. A father whose Tunisian-Tunisian family has its own letters in its own wooden box. A boy from Darwin called Niko who learns the difference between a phone call and a kitchen.
By June 2030, Lina has helped build the first volume of a Sfax-Greek oral-history archive. She has been to Kerkennah three times. She has spent forty afternoons at her grandmother's painted table. And she has earned the right to think one sentence at sunrise. The Sfax Letters is a quiet, trilingual, archive-minded novel about the women whose hands wrote what their daughters could not afterward read.
