Résumé

A piano under a tarp on a Greek island. A pencil under a bench in Alexandria. Seventy years between them. Phaedon Trakas is eighteen when he arrives at Pothia, the first of five students sent to a converted sponge merchant's house on Kalymnos. In the common room, under a tarp, he finds a 1953 piano. In the museum archive, he finds two letters written in 1957 that name a Trakas of Alexandria. The letters are addressed to the great-grandfather his grandmother never finished telling him about.
Two years in Pothia teach him what the letters say. Two years in Alexandria teach him what they mean. In the family apartment on Cleopatra Street, kept in the Trakas line since 1933, Phaedon finds a 1953 piano of his own, and, on a Saturday afternoon in October 2029, finds a great-great-uncle's hand in pencil on the underside of the bench. The hand is addressed to the future descendant who would find it.
The piece he is writing for graduation begins to write itself. The Pencil Under the Bench is a literary coming-of-age novel about inheritance, about return, about what a family carries and what it cannot. It is Book 4 of The Keystone Cycle, five interconnected novels following five Greek diaspora teenagers across the same four-year exchange programme. Each book stands alone; read in publication order for the full cohort's arc.
Greek. French. Italian. The Mediterranean at dawn. A piano at the bench.
