In a future where the Atlantic is privatized and the sky is no longer the limit, the Jansen Corporation rules from House 39 (a gargantuan, genetically engineered redwood tree reaching into the stars). Within this self-contained nation, the law is simple... work for the company, pay your taxes, or face the private military of CEO Marcel Jansen. Ramil Nazarov, an Azerbaijani seagull anthropomorph and drifter, survives the slums by his wits and his wings.
But when a job for an underground hacker group ends in a firestorm of corporate retribution, Ramil is left with nothing but a forged fighter's license and a desperate gamble for survival.  To escape the reaching claws of the corporation, Ramil enters the Bald-Cypress Tournament, a televised blood sport where the world's most lethal combatants fight to the death for a chance at a new life. Guided by Kapila, a one-eyed lion manager with an affection for mass homicide and forged IDs, Ramil must navigate a gauntlet of "Cage Liners", genetically modified monsters, and the sociopathic whims of the corporate elite.
