The armor stood alone in a black room for twenty-eight years. On the second Tuesday in March, someone took it apart plate by plate and carried it out through a door a security guard opened for them. Halverton loses two things that night: a blackened suit of sixteenth-century plate armor made for a mercenary the chronicles called the Iron Penitent - and a night guard of nineteen years, who died at his desk with his chair pushed back, as though he had stood up to meet something.
