Stacey McMullen reads violent men for a living - as a prison psychologist, she's paid to understand what makes them dangerous. But her own gambling and cocaine habits have buried her in debt to a crime family, and when she can't pay, they don't want money. They want access: to the prison, to the inmates, to her skills. Working off the debt turns her into exactly the kind of operator she once assessed from the safe side of the table - until her sister, a police sergeant, starts pulling a thread that leads straight back to her.
