Résumé

Into the pitch-black heart of the Old Kingdom, where silence hides the treasures of an immortal dynasty, men with dead hearts dare to challenge eternity. Beneath the unforgiving desert, lies the Eternal House of Queen Hetepheres, mother of Pharaoh Khufu. Shielded by massive granite monoliths , labyrinthine tunnels , and ancient sacred incantations , her resting place holds unprecedented riches: a royal sarcophagus wrapped in pure gold , inlaid with emerald and turquoise , meant to ensure her rebirth among the gods.
Harnakht, a hardened sculptor and stonecutter who helped construct the royal necropolis , knows every false chamber and engineered corridor carved into the bedrock. Consumed by a burning rebellion against a lifetime of grinding labor and poverty , he leads a secretive gang on a perilous, clandestine descent into the earth. In the suffocating dust, they shatter the stone barriers and unseal a treasure that was never meant to see the light of day.
Yet, stripping the Queen's body of its gold is only the beginning. As the royal court scrambles to conceal the catastrophic breach from the sacred King , and the conspirators scatter across the Nile to melt down the sacred metal, a far darker fate unfolds. From shadowy palace politics to the haunting scent of funerary resins that refuses to leave the soul , The Gold Catacombs is a masterfully woven historical thriller.
It vividly explores the clash between human desire and divine retribution, peeling back the layers of ancient Egypt to reveal the high price of surviving stolen immortality.
Mohamed Hassan Al-Awn is an acclaimed Egyptian novelist and short-story writer known for his compelling psychological depth and nuanced engagement with historical and sociopolitical themes. Rather than merely chronicling past events, Al-Awn explores history through a purely human lens, probing enduring questions of authority, solitude, and justice. He was awarded Egypt's prestigious State Encouragement Award for his celebrated novel Mawlana.
His notable literary works include the novels Saradib al-Dhahab (The Basements of Gold), Sijn al-Tawus (The Peacock's Prison), Mamar al-Shay al-Hindi (The Indian Tea Passage), Marakib al-Layl (The Night Boats), and the story collection Fanous Maksur (A Broken Lantern).
