The states had delegated certain powers to the federal government, but they had preserved their sovereignty. #3 Lincoln was a supremacist who opposed equality for black people. He also illegally suspended the writ of habeas corpus and imprisoned tens of thousands of Northern political opponents. #4 Lincoln was a great humanitarian, but a great humanitarian does not manipulate his own people into starting one of the bloodiest wars in history.
Humanitarians do not become obsessed with allocating tax dollars to the development of more powerful and more devastating weapons of mass destruction.
