We turn toward what I call false refuges, which are false because they provide a temporary sense of comfort or security but they create more suffering in the long run. #4 The author's wife, Pam, was able to fully attend to her husband during his last days because she allowed herself to be fully present with her inner experience. She was able to let go of all her ideas of how his dying should be and what else she should be doing, and just consent to the situation.
