Résumé

Volume-Seven in the "Subcontinent Sirens" collection brings us another two female-led books of obsession, mesmerism, and psychological warfare; both involving the misadventures of European men with the women of the Indian Subcontinent. We open with Rafael Menton's "Tanisha the Sorceress", his tale of assumed Western superiority and the horror that befalls three British archaeologists in India after one of them discovers the tomb of the supposedly mythical Tanisha.
An evil goddess of Subcontinent lore said to have been as irresistible to all men as she was depraved and merciless. A reputation each of them is about to witness at first-hand. This is followed by Kurt Steiner's "A Journey to Disgrace", in which a wealthy playboy Englishman, joining a cruise to the East at the beginning of the twentieth-century meets a beauteous Indian woman and her not so fetching young stepdaughter on his first night aboard.
A stepmother and stepdaughter blessed with powerful mesmeric abilities. The same abilities that will see him powerless to resist when they insist he leave the ship in Madras and join him for a long stay at their home. A long stay as their servant and domestic!Believable female-led fiction for those those readers who enjoy having the dark corners of their imaginations triggered.
