Résumé

There is supposed to be a clear line between prison staff and the incarcerated people they supervise. In reality, that line is not always as simple as it looks. In Staff on the Yard, Michael Good examines the complicated relationships that develop between correctional officers, counselors, case managers, teachers, medical personnel, administrators, and the incarcerated population. Some relationships remain professional.
Some become meaningful. Others cross boundaries completely. This book explores the human side of prison staff dynamics, including friendship, favoritism, manipulation, selective enforcement, information trading, contraband, corruption, sexual relationships, and the power imbalance that exists when one group has authority over another. Good also looks at the staff members who genuinely help people, the officers who enforce rules fairly, and the employees who understand that professionalism and basic human respect can exist at the same time.
But where there is power, access, money, vulnerability, and constant proximity, there is also opportunity for lines to blur. Staff on the Yard is not an attack on every correctional employee, nor is it an attempt to excuse misconduct by incarcerated people. It is an honest examination of what can happen when human relationships develop inside an environment built around control. Because behind the fence, staff and incarcerated people may stand on opposite sides of the system.
But every day, they still walk through the same walls. Staff on the Yard is part of Michael Good's On the Yard series, published by Good Impressions Publishing.
