Résumé

As in many areas of Fiqh, Riba is a most contentious issue. It is in fact a very difficult subject, to which scholars; past and present have dedicated many pages and years to understand and to educate. It continues to be a fascinating subject, especially today with the growth of the Islamic Finance Industry. At issue for scholars, is whether gold and silver jewelry have been transformed through fabrication into a commodity, like other commodities.
Is it correct to say, as stated by Ibn Al-Arabi, that "intention and fabrication have removed it from its origin into the realm of commodity"? Riba can manifest itself in so many ways, none more so, it seems, than within the realm of jewelry, within our everyday lives.
