"Skeeter" was Kraus' best friend during his early teen years, when the two of them began surfing the waves of Hermosa Beach together. Kraus discovers a man shot to death in his friend's apartment.

The investigation draws Kraus back into the insular subculture of the 1950's Southern California surfing community - a community he was once a part of. Along the way, Kraus crosses paths with Jon Lindbergh, son of the famous aviator; Johnny Stompanato, a vicious gangster courting Lana Turner; and Lloyd Bridges, a film and television actor set to star in a new television series called Sea Hunt.
