Requiem for a Waterman: A 1950's Los Angeles Mystery
The Terrific Follow-Up to the popular modern-noir novel, "Red Sockets"!Los Angeles - 1957Gordon "Gordy" Kraus, a former LAPD patrolman and Army CID officer in postwar Berlin, has been a Los Angeles private investigator since his return from Europe ten years before. Kraus is retained by a new client, an on-the-rise Mexican-American gang leader, to track down two scammers who've bilked the citizens of his neighborhood out of thousands of dollars in an insurance fraud scheme.
The only thing Kraus has to go on is a shoebox full of random metal parts. To further complicate matters, a prominent television producer hires Kraus to take on a missing persons case. Andor "Skeeter" Kovacs, one of the studio's stuntmen, has gone missing. "Skeeter" was Kraus' best friend during his early teen years, when the two of them began surfing the waves of Hermosa Beach together. Kraus discovers a man shot to death in his friend's apartment.
Two bullet holes and only one suspect - his friend, "Skeeter" Kovacs. The investigation draws Kraus back into the insular subculture of the 1950's Southern California surfing community - a community he was once a part of. Along the way, Kraus crosses paths with Jon Lindbergh, son of the famous aviator; Johnny Stompanato, a vicious gangster courting Lana Turner; and Lloyd Bridges, a film and television actor set to star in a new television series called Sea Hunt.
Kraus discovers when you set out to square the accounts of an old debt, you may end up paying with your life.
